Kansas law enforcement organizations are having trouble keeping track of evidence and seized property, reports The Topeka Capital-Journal.
A recent audit of Kansas law enforcement agencies revealed a lack of internal controls to sufficiently track seized property. One 2016 legislative measure would have changed the way state and local agencies took possession of real and personal property, including cash, guns, vehicles and land. But the bill died in the Legislature.
Six Kansas law enforcement agencies were audited. A 2015 report by the Institute for Justice criticized Kansas’s approach to allowing law enforcement agencies to seize cash and assets. However, no one was charged with a crime. Still, in the national analysis, Kansas law enforcement earned a D-minus.
