Planned Parenthood Receives Grant to Provide Free Birth Control to Low-Income Texans

In recent years, the Texas Legislature has mounted an aggressive push to defund Planned Parenthood. The effort reached an impasse last month when the US Supreme Court struck down a Texas effort to close many clinics in the state.

Now the women’s health organization has received more good news. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas has received a $2 million donation to fund birth control to low-income residents, reports New York magazine.

The money will go toward providing IUDs, as well as STD testing for 1,000 women a year over the next three years. The donation comes from the Boone Family Foundation and the Harold Simmons Foundation. The free birth-control program will launch in September.

Colorado recently received a similar multimillion dollar grant to offer free IUDs. The result was a 40 percent drop in teen pregnancy rates and 42 percent decrease in teen abortions.
