Expert Tips For Sticking To Your New Year's Resolution

Sarah_Ackerman

Out here on the High Plains, with all this cold weather and vast emptiness, New Year’s resolutions can feel daunting. That’s why it’s especially daunting to prepare yourself mentally for your resolution.

Business Insider recently spoke to behavioral scientists to learn which techniques they advise to help you stick to your resolution.

First, you should only make a resolution if you absolutely want to change. According to Harvard researchers, “Long-lasting change is most likely when it's self-motivated and rooted in positive thinking.” Also, be specific about your goals. Saying you want to “eat better” won’t set you up for success as much as saying you will stop drinking sodas.

Next, keep your promise to yourself for the first month—no exceptions! Give yourself a solid month of concerted effort to create the new habit. If you fail, be forgiving.

And finally, if you get rid of an old habit, replace it with a new one. If you want to stop biting your nails, for instance, consider chewing on licorice instead.
