A Texan Weighs in on the Great Guacamole Debate

Nikodem Nijaki

Last week The New York Times sparked a controversy about whether it was kosher to put peas in guacamole. Even President Obama entered the mix, tweeting that he opposed the idea.  Now the British newspaper The Guardian has published an editorial by a Texan, who has offered his thoughts on the squabble, calling it “mind-numbing,” and referring to guacamole as “a so-so vegan side dish.”  “Here, in God’s country, we have meaty debates,” wrote Texas Monthly  freelancer Jeff Winkler. “Texans have real fights—over barbecue.”

He continued, “ Barbecue is a debate that matters.  There really is a difference between wet barbecue and dry rub and between various kinds of smoking methods; there’s also only one right one.  [America] will be great again when we can have a meaningful debate about the best kind of bacon.”
