A Well-Kept Texas Secret Makes a Splash in the Washington Post

Steve Johnson

It’s not every day that a High Plains destination receives the royal treatment from The Washington Post. But last week the legendary newspaper heaped praise onto Palo Duro Canyon, calling it “Texas’ Best Kept Secret.”

The canyon, notes the Post, “cleaves the [Texas] Panhandle’s plains into a bewitchingly rugged land.” Much of the article was focused on how few people actually know about the canyon, even though it’s the nation’s second largest after the Grand Canyon.

Palo Duro, located southeast of Amarillo, has been a favorite destination for West Texans for a long time. But most of the nation simply isn’t aware of its existence, Much of the mystery lies in the fact that PD isn’t a national park. The Post hit all the highlights in their overview, including Charles Goodnight, Lighthouse Rock, and the heritage of Comanche, Apache, and Kiowa Indians. As a resident of nearby Canyon noted upon seeing the article, “There goes the neighborhood.”
