What Exactly Is Greg Abbott Up To?

Bob Daemmerich

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has a portentous new book out that tackles some of the biggest issues in America. Included a proposal for a convention of the states to change the U.S. Constitution. So, The Texas Tribune wondered, what’s the Texas exec up to? Abbott claims he’s not using the book as a springboard to position himself for higher office. The governor points to the timing of the book, which drops before the 2016 presidential election, as the strongest proof he’s not running for the White House.

But many of his supporters believe differently. Bill Miller, a lobbyist who has been around Austin long enough to see two former governors run, put it succinctly: If Trump loses in November, “Greg Abbott will be a candidate for president in four years.”

One Abbott supporter said she thought he would add "poise and dignity" to national Republican politics. Abbott still maintains his focus is on returning authority to the states.
