Kansas is one of 18 states that the federal government is calling a “red zone” because of increasing COVID-19 cases.

According to documents obtained by The Center for Public Integrity, the government classified states with more than 100 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people last week as “red zones.”

Despite that, three of Kansas’ 105 counties, have no reported cases of the virus.

Wallace County in western Kansas is one of them. Because nearby counties have high case numbers, Public Health Administrator Aften Gardner says they canceled the county carnival.

“Even if we don’t have any cases, if we’re the only carnival around that would be open, we were afraid of having a lot of out of county people come and attend,” Gardner said. “And there’d be no way to stop people that weren’t from our county to come.”

Kansas has reported more than 3,000 new cases of the virus since last Friday.
