A new submarine will head to sea next year, with a taste of the Centennial State on board.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that cooks aboard the brand-new USS Colorado have been studying the cuisine of the state that is the submarine’s namesake. Some of Colorado’s top chefs recently met with the kitchen staff of the underwater vessel.
After studying with the chef from the Broadmoor Hotel, Seaman Thomas Carswell described the experience as “amazing.” Cooking on the submarine won’t be easy. The galley inside the new Colorado's 377-foot hull is kept small to make room for a nuclear reactor, torpedoes and missiles. In the tiny space, the Colorado’s cooks must pump out 400 meals a day. On top of that, they have to be quiet. Banging pots and pans could cause blips on enemy sonar and reveal the submarine’s location. The last ship dubbed Colorado was a World War II battleship.
