Amarillo: May Hailstorm Damage Total Is In

The hailstorm that hammered Amarillo on May 28 resulted in $500 million in insured losses according to Claims Journal.  The final figure was released recently by the Property Claim Services of the Insurance Services Office (ISO).  The ISO is responsible for tallying catastrophic weather losses across the country.

Hail up to baseball size combined with high winds damaged up to 75 percent of all residential property in the city.  It is the city’s costliest weather catastrophe on record, and the tenth costliest storm in the state. 

The storm passed through the Texas panhandle into Oklahoma where losses total $450 million.  In total, seven states were affected by the storm with a combined loss total of $1.3 billion.
