As Electricity Usage Breaks Records in Texas, Some Tips to Conserve Power

Texans are being asked to curb their electric usage as demand has reached record-breaking levels, reports The Texas Tribune.The operator of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which covers most of the state, is asking Texas consumers to use less electricity wherever possible. Sizzling temperatures this summer have caused energy use to surge, breaking three consecutive July records.

Here are some tips to help curb energy usage: Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances and electronic equipment. Close blinds and drapes that are exposed to direct sun. Set air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher, and use fans.  Do not use electric home appliances during the peak afternoon hours of 3 to 7 pm. Don't open refrigerators  more than necessary, and cook with microwaves rather than an electric ranges or ovens.
