Today, I caught up with community advocate and Amarillo United Citizens Forum representative, Melodie Graves, while she shared details about a city-wide Annual School Supply Drive & Giveaway going on through late August. The event will take place on Saturday, August 29th from 11am to 2pm CT at the Black Historical Cultural Center (901 N. Hayden), just off of Amarillo Boulevard. This event is in conjunction with Tremaine Brown of Shi Lee’s Restaurant (1213 SW 3rd) and Storybridge, and they’re hoping to serve more than 500 kids!
Items needed for kids (K-12) include: pens, pencils, erasers, pencil boxes, backpacks, earbuds!, markers, dry erase markers, scissors, calculators, folders, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, masks, glue, glue sticks, composition books, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, & graph paper.
Drop-off items through Friday, August 28th at 5pm at either Shi Lee’s Restaurant (1213 SW 3rd) or Black Historical Cultural Center (901 N. Hayden). If you wanted to give cash instead, both locations are accepting cash or check; if you prefer to pay electronically, you can donate via Cash App to: $MELODIEGRAVES.
The day of the event, visitors will stay in their cars to keep all participants protected. They plan to greet all attendees with a chance to register to vote. Then, families can collect the donated supplies, free books from Storybridge to encourage early literacy, and a lunch to take away and enjoy.
