Mexico has waded into the debate over “Sanctuary Cities” in Texas,reports Bloomberg.
A representative for our southern neighbors told a U.S. appeals court that the law sowed “fear, panic, and uncertainty” among Mexicans legally living in Texas.
The legislation was enacted by Texas’s Republican leadership and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott this year. It allows police to ask for documentation of legal residence during the most routine of encounters.
Mexico asserted that the law has prevented some Mexican nationals from seeking help in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The country also claimed that, because of the law, Mexico’s brightest citizens now feel discouraged from attending Texas universities.
Mexico charged that the law is causing “irreparable harm,” adding that the measure “has engendered unprecedented levels of anxiety in the Mexican community.”
