High Plains Morning
Weekdays from 9:00 AM to noon CT on HPPR
High Plains Morning is a long-standing tradition at HPPR. A daily mix of singer-songwriters, folk, jazz, Americana, world, reggae, bluegrass, rock and just about anything else that you can think of. Add a few live in-studio performances, interviews with community partners, and news from NPR + regional weather at the top of every hour, and you have a great way to move through your morning!
If you'd like to submit music for consideration, please mail a CD and one-sheet to: Jenny Inzerillo, Music Director, High Plains Public Radio, 104 SW 6th Ave., Suite B4, Amarillo, TX, 79101. To kick off the TumbleWeek celebration on High Plains Morning, where we feature our live-recorded performances from the 2022 Tumbleweed Festival, I interviewed Tina Casagrand of The New Territory magazine. The latest issue, "Search & Find," has a piece about HPPR and Tumbleweed Festival, as well as coverage of Jacob's Well (penned by HPPR Radio Readers Book Club's Leslie VonHolten). Tune in all week for more music, interviews, and regional shout-outs!

Finally, HPPR was able to get the fabulous folk duo Ordinary Elephant into the studio for a live set! Pete Damore & Crystal Hariu-Damore brought their guitars and banjo into our downtown Amarillo studio and played a few songs for the High Plains. Such incredible songwriters! If you missed it, please check this out.

Thanks to Alex Gregory, curator of the Amarillo Museum of Art, for bringing collage artist Gary Burnley by the studio today for a conversation about his new exhibition, "Stranger(s) in the Village," opening tonight at 6:30p CT at AMoA. We discussed art history, representation, mixed media compositions, his juxtaposition of imagery, and why this show was almost titled "Charlie Parker with Strings."

Beneath the wooden gazebo in Lee Richardson Zoo, HPPR captured interviews and live sets from artists headlining the Tumbleweed Festival in August of 2022—and we shared those with you on High Plains Morning throughout the week of February 20th. But in case you missed it, HERE ARE THE AUDIO LINKS! Enjoy this little slice of Tumbleweed Festival, High Plains!

This Saturday night in Amarillo, don't miss four buried gems from George Frideric Handel: his Keyboard Suites 1, 2, 3 & 5. Performers include Choon-ha Nam of West Texas A&M University's School of Music and Nathan Fryml of Amarillo College. They joined me on High Plains Morning to share more about the program, which will be at Amarillo College's Concert Hall Theatre at 7:30p on February 11th. (But don't miss the pre-concert lecture at 6:45p CT, with Dr. Kimberly Hieb of HPPR's Classical Music Amarillo & yours truly!)

It's that time of year again. HPPR is ready for Folk Alliance International's 2023 conference—and so is the folk scene. Plus, this year's festival has a new leader at the helm: Neeta Ragoowansi. We were lucky enough to catch up with her this week!

Today, we caught up with HPPR's former high-school intern Rafael Rodriguez. He's now a hip-hop artist & producer living in far-north California. This Saturday night, he's returning to his hometown of Amarillo for a LIVE HIP-HOP SHOW, and he's bringing his friend and collaborator, Davey Legend, with him. The two of them joined us on "High Plains Morning" to talk about the show, their work in the music industry, and growing up in wide open spaces.
