Kansas is taking its first steps toward complying with new EPA requirements to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,reports The Topeka Capital-Journal. While Kansas is suing the federal government to block the Clean Power Plan, the state is also making efforts to comply with the new law.
The EPA has set a CO2 reduction target for each of the 50 states. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas widely believed to contribute to climate change. Some states have raised concerns that cutting emissions could send electrical costs up dramatically or threaten power reliability. Part of the plan utilizes “building blocks,” which replace coal-fired plants with more natural gas and renewable energy.
An educational session, open to the public, will be held on Jan. 12 in Topeka.
