A new Kansas poll shows a result that is perhaps unexpected among the traditionally red state: Kansans show a preference for raising state taxes on the wealthy and big business.
As The Topeka Capital-Journal reports, a majority of Kansans also favor repealing the state income tax exemption. The survey was conducted by the nonpartisan Docking Institute of Public Affairs. It also shows that a majority of the population supports expanding Medicaid in Kansas. In addition, two-thirds of Kansas residents support escalating taxes on large corporations and top-income individuals to address the state’s budget shortfalls.
Kansans continue to view their state’s political fortunes with deep uncertainty. Only 9 percent consider the Kansas economy to be in very good or excellent condition. All told, 62 percent of respondents said lawmakers should target tax increases at large corporations.
