Today is our nation’s birthday, and for many across the High Plains, it’s a time to break out the fireworks.
But here on this windy, grassy flatland, those Black Cats and bottle rockets can be deadly to you and your neighbors. With that in mind, here are a few safety tips,courtesy of the National Council on Fireworks Safety.
Make sure to obey local laws, and read cation labels on all fireworks. An adult should supervise all activities, and fireworks should never be given to children. Also, never shoot fireworks while drinking—save the beer and cocktails until after the show. Always use fireworks outdoors, in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles. Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away. You should never try to relight a “dud” firework. Instead, wait 20 minutes, then soak the firework in water.
