One day soon, some residents of the Texas Panhandle may be able to obtain free prescriptions. As NBCDFW reports,the first public free pharmacy in the state of Texas is now open in Dallas.
The facility was launched by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of North Texas, a group dedicated to giving a helping hand to low-income Texans who are ill and in need of medications.
The pharmacy unofficially opened six weeks ago. St. Vincent de Paul spokeswoman Kate Rose Marquez explained that, “By word of mouth only,” with no marketing push, the pharmacy has dispensed 872 prescriptions with a market value of over $200,000.
This resource is available to individuals who have no health insurance coverage, have a household income at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, have a valid prescription, and who live in the greater Dallas area.
But the organization says it has a four-year plan to eventually expand the free pharmacy program statewide, including into the Panhandle.
