The connection Texas House Speaker Joe Straus shares with the 41st president goes back decades. He worked for Vice President George H.W. Bush, and then again when Bush entered the Oval Office.As heard on Texas Public Radio
Bush died in Houston on Friday. He was 94.
In a statement, Straussaid, “George Bush was the type of person who all of us should aspire to be: He was an unfailingly kind man who never wavered in his devotion to his family, his principles, his country, and his belief in serving others.”
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg also shared his thoughts, calling Bush "a true American statesman."
Joaquin Castro, a Democrat who represents San Antonio in the U.S. House, joined the chorus of political voices honoring the 41st president. He shared his impressions of Bush with NPR’s "All Things Considered."
“A diplomat, a president obviously but also a father and a husband and someone across the political spectrum revered,” Castro said.
Lyle Larson, a Republican who represents San Antonio in the Texas House, shared his thoughts with aphotoon social media. The caption read “One of the finest gentlemen we have had as our president.”
