This is Mike Strong, in Hays, for HPPR. The book is “That Old Ace in the Hole” by Annie Proulx.Bob Dollar, our protagonist, is on a mission - to the Texas panhandle - for Global Pork Rind which is headquartered in Tokyo and Chicago. Far from the panhandle.

Wind and water dominate every conversation in the Panhandle-Plains region. It is a hard country and humans have come and gone and crossed the Llano Estacado for millennia.

I’m Alex Hunt, Professor of English at West Texas A&M University in Canyon for the HPPR Radio Readers Book Club 2022 Fall Read.It’s my pleasure to be discussing Annie Proulx’s That Old Ace in the Hole, published in 2002. Proulx is best known for her novel The Shipping News, which won both the Pulitzer and the National Book Award, and her short story “Brokeback Mountain,” which caused quite a stir when Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal starred in the film version.

My name is Andrea Elise and I live in Amarillo, Texas.As someone who grew up in Amarillo but lived in several different cities in the U.S. and two years in South Korea, I found Annie Proulx’s novel, That Old Ace in the Hole a mixed bag of farcical and observational storytelling.

Our motel rooms and our trucks were our offices, both in the field and in the rooms. Sometimes you would really look hard for a laundromat.
