KJJP-FM 105.7 is currently operating at very reduced power and signal range using a back-up transmitter. This is because of complicated problems with its very old primary transmitter. Local engineers are currently working on that transmitter and consulting with the manufacturer to diagnose and fix the problems. We apologize for this disruption and service as we work as quickly as possible to restore KJPFM to full power. In the mean time you can always stream either the HPPR mix service or HPPR connect service using the player above or the HPPR app.

Ogallala Aquifer Initiative: Good Soil Health Practices Benefit Playas

Scott Bauer

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

Playa wetlands benefit from practices that result in good soil health. The Natural Resources Conservation Service says there are four principles to improving soil health:

  1. keep soil covered as much as possible
  2. disturb the soil as little as possible
  3. keep plants growing throughout the year to feed the soil
  4. diversify as much as possible using crop rotation and cover crops.

This Playa Country episode is the first in a three-part series on the effect of soil health on playas. It first aired on HPPR Tuesday, March 18, 2014.
