Missouri Group Hopes to Join Kansas Wind Power Transmission Line

A controversial transmission line that would carry wind power to the east from Kansas is gaining more support, reportsThe Wichita Eagle. The 780-mile Grain Belt Express line will transmit wind power from western Kansas across Missouri and further eastward. And now a group representing Missouri municipal utilities has signed up for space on the transmission line.

There’s only one catch: A state commission in Missouri has rejected the proposed line. The transmission system has already been okayed in Kansas, Indiana and Illinois. However, the Missouri Public Service Commission blocked the project last summer amid strong opposition from rural landowners.

Ranchers and farmers cited concerns about crops, pastures and maneuvering large equipment around towers. The new contract is contingent on the project being approved by regulators in the Show Me State.
