Xcel Energy is suspending disconnections to service to ensure people have uninterrupted power as communities and states deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a statement issued by the company on Sunday, Xcel will not be disconnecting residential customers’ electric services until further notice, to "help ensure people have the energy they need to power their homes and keep their families safe."
Xcel is also going to arrange payment plans with customers who are having difficulty paying their electric bills.
Brett Carter, Xcel's executive vice president and chief customer and innovation officer, said the company wanted to assure its customers and communities it serves that it will support them “during this difficult time.”
He added, “The energy grid is essential to the nation’s critical infrastructure, and we’re taking a well-planned, heightened approach to all threats, including COVID-19. We will work with our customers, our community and government leaders to ensure the lights and heat stay on and that those we serve are cared for and protected.”
