Today on High Plains Morning, I spoke with Dr. Daniel Helbert, Assistant Professor of English & Director of Undergraduate English Studies at West Texas A & M University’s Department of English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages, in advance of tonight’s Great Books Discussion Series, happening online at 7p CT. He’ll be discussing the medieval poem Pearl, which he describes as “the most beautiful poem written in Middle English… an elegy for a child who died at two, a dream vision of the narrator/father meeting the child in heaven, an allegory for understanding death and grief from a medieval Christian perspective, and a revelation of ‘Paradise’ that is excelled only by Dante Alighieri’s Paradiso and John Milton’s Paradise Lost. It is a tour de force of medieval learning and culture."
