About the position
This position offers you the opportunity to:

  • Use your finance and administrative skills and experience to further the mission-driven work of HPPR to enhance the educational, cultural and civic lives of individuals and communities across the High Plains;
  • Play an essential and central role in the daily operations of HPPR;
  • Have the strong support of HPPR’s Executive Director and other staff in becoming familiar with HPPR’s operations and learning about possibly unfamiliar areas;
  • Learn about broadcast and digital public media, work on the interesting and changing opportunities and challenges of a media organization, grow skills and responsibilities within HPPR, and gain experience with the public media system nationwide;
  • Have flexibility in working hours and partial remote working, as coordinated with other HPPR staff.

About High Plains Public Radio (HPPR)
HPPR serves Western Kansas, Eastern Colorado, and the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles with public media services closely tuned to the environment, economy, cultures, history and community life of this High Plains region. These services include two audio programming channels (HPPR MIX offering news and mixed music and HPPR CONNECT with all news, information and talk) and hppr.org focused on regional news, features and events. To provide access to these services, HPPR operates a network of 18 FM stations along with digital streaming and a mobile app. Regional content is originated from studios in both Garden City, Kansas, and Amarillo, Texas and additional production work is done by individuals residing in communities across the region and beyond.

HPPR is an independent non-profit corporation founded in 1975 and currently receives 81% of its funding from individual contributions, business underwriting, and foundation support.

Responsibilities

  • Routine bookkeeping for accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, payroll taxes, etc.
  • Banking management including deposits, authorized account transfers and ACH payments, monthly account reconciliations, signatory changes, etc.
  • Preparation of monthly financial reports for the Executive Director and HPPR Board of Directors
  • Preparation for the annual audit as specifies by the outside auditing firm
  • Working closely with the Executive Director on:
    • Managing accounts payable/receivable and reviewing monthly general ledger reports
    • Preparation of the annual operating budget
    • Accounting and reporting on special projects involving restricted grant funds
    • Annual review of lease arrangements and insurance coverage across transmitting and studio sites
    • Annual compliance certifications and contracting with various entities (State of KS and TX, FCC, CPB, NPR, etc.)
  • Working with HPPR’s Development Director and Membership managers on membership accounting, billing and payments
  • Working with HPPR’s Development Director and Sponsorship Representative on business sponsorship contract accounting, billing and payments
  • HR-related tasks including tracking PTO, health plan coverage, onboarding new employees, part-time staff and freelancers, etc.
  • Administrative duties including records management, document organization and access on Google Drive, and general office tasks shared with other staff
  • Participation in weekly staff and management meetings
  • Other duties as appropriately assigned by the Executive Director

Preferred qualifications, experience and aptitudes

  • General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting practices
  • 3+ years’ experience with QuickBooks
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Products (especially Excel) and Google Drive and Google Sheets, Docs and Forms
  • Experience and skills in working in an organization requiring a high degree of team work, mutual support, flexibility and load sharing, given challenging work and limited resources
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, including effective verbal and written communication
  • Familiarity with HPPR and public radio listening

Reporting relationship: direct report to the Executive Director of High Plains Public Radio

Location: Garden City, Kansas

Job type: Full time; salaried

Compensation range: $40,000 - $48,000
