A fundraising campaign to sustain the Harrington String Quartet after a major loss of funding has raised a majority of its goal.
Stringendo, a West Texas A&M University project established in April to support the Canyon, Tex. classical music quartet, has raised $25,000 of a $35,000 goal in under four months, the Amarillo Globe-News reports.In April, the Amarillo Symphony announced a plan to withdraw funding for the Harrington String Quartet, which made up nearly half of the quartet's budget.
Previously, the quartet had operated under an agreement between West Texas A&M University and the symphony. Under this agreement, the symphony contributed to the quartet's operating budget while employing the quartet's members as principal chairs in the symphony. Quartet members also serve as faculty members in the WT music department.
The quartet was established in the early 1981 by an endowment grant of $500,000 to WT and a $400,000 grant to the symphony from the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation.
Stringendo's fall membership drive begins September 8th.
