Northern Cheyenne descendants and some descendants of the U.S. Cavalry will gather at Lake Scott State Park to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Punished Woman’s Fork Thursday.
According to a newsletter from the El Quartelejo Museum, the battle between the Northern Cheyenne and the U.S. Army took place on Sept. 27, 1878.
The battle is often referred to as the last Indian battle in Kansas and took place in the valley and canyons that are located just south of present-day Lake Scott State Park. The site is now named Ladder Creek but known locally as Beaver Creek, where a ceremony commemorating the anniversary will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. CST.
The public is also invited to gather at El Quartelejo Museum and the Jerry Thomas Gallery & Collection in Scott City from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday to enjoy guest speakers and ceremonial dance performers.
