A group of Texas congressmen is asking the White House to reconsider its plans to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.
According to The Houston Chronicle, the lawmakers are worried that the Trump team’s plans to overhaul the trade deal could permanently damage the complex network of energy agreements between Canada, the United States and Mexico.
That concern has been almost universally echoed by business leaders in the Lone Star State, who have urged the Trump Administration to leave NAFTA alone. Lawmakers and business leaders have highlighted the risk that pulling out of the trade agreement would result in lost business for Texas oil and gas producers.
Mexico is now the largest consumer of exported U.S. natural gas, and many refineries along Texas Gulf Coast rely on the importation of Canadian and Mexican oil.
