Texas Panhandle Schools Face Federal Sanctions for Poor Performance

Seventeen Texas Panhandle schools are subject to federal sanctions, which could include closure, because of their poor performance.  The group is in the bottom 15 percent of Title I in the state according to the Amarillo Globe-News.

Six campuses have been given priority.  If they haven’t received TTIPS funding, and additional federal grant funding for improvement efforts.

Three of the priority campuses are:

  • Richard Milburn Academy in Amarillo
  • Dalhart Independent School District’s XIT Secondary School
  • Boys Ranch ISD’s STARR Academy

A September waiver from the U.S. Department of Education gives the schools two years to make significant improvement.  If the school still meets the criteria for a priority or focus school, sanctions such as such as replacing a campus’ teachers and principals, having a monitor who works with troubled programs or closing and repurposing the school will be implemented.
