Rural Oklahoma School District Posts Controversial Gun Signs

Tulsa World

A rural school district in Oklahoma has posted some signs on its campus that are drawing attention, according to The Rural Blog. The fours signs read: “Please be aware that certain staff members at Okay Public Schools can be legally armed and may use whatever force is necessary to protect our students.”

The town of Okay, Oklahoma, has 500 K-12 students, and is located about 50 miles east of Tulsa. Okay’s school signs come in the wake of an Oklahoma bill signed into law last May. The Special Reserve School Resource Officer Act allows certain people to carry handguns on public school property.

In August, Okay's school board approved a policy that “states that administrators . . . may bring to campus a gun concealed on their person or kept in a locked box.” In 1999, a shooting at a school seven miles from Okay resulted in five students being wounded.
