Fire dangers continue to threaten Western Oklahoma, as the state recovers from historic blazes that burned up hundreds of thousands of acres and left dozens of homes in ruins.
However, the Oklahoma Forestry Service had not issued any more red flag warnings as of late Thursday afternoon.
As The Oklahoman reports,the fires this week scorched an area amounting to almost 450 square miles, or almost 285,000 acres. Highways were closed and communities evacuated, and at least two people lost their lives—a woman in Dewey County who perished in her car, and a 61-year-old man who died from injuries suffered in a blaze near Leedey.
The man was a Roger Mills County employee who was attempting to help firefighters beat back the blaze. The state continues to suffer under warm, dry weather with gusting winds—an ideal climate for fires.
