KUNC's Colorado Edition: It's A Jungle Out Here

Luke Runyon
/
KUNC

On this week's Colorado Edition, we hear from the man who killed a mountain lion in self-defense, explore uncertainty over the U.S. military's transgender policy and recap the Denver teachers strike. Plus, did you know there's a matchmaker... for zoo animals?

Listen to KUNC's Colorado Edition for Friday, Feb. 15, 2019.

This week's big story was the three-day teacher strike in Denver.   Negotiations between the Denver Classroom Teachers Association and Denver Public Schools ended with both parties coming to an agreement over pay around 6 a.m. Thursday, just in time to avoid a fourth day of striking. Education reporter Stephanie Daniel, who has been covering this story all week, gives us the rundown.

As for the other big story everyone has been talking about non-stop, earlier this month a Colorado trail runner fought for his life against a juvenile mountain lion that attacked him in the foothills outside Fort Collins. He sat down with Luke Runyon for his first one-on-one media interview and recounts the entire tale.

In 2016, the U.S. military ended its ban on transgender troops, allowing them to serve openly. The policy was short-lived with President Donald Trump moving to reinstate the ban a year later. But as Michael de Yoanna reports, amid legal challenges, the fate of transgender troops is still unclear.

Love is in the air this month, even in the most unlikely of places — like the Denver Zoo. Well, sort of. Stacy Nick spoke with one zoo official who helps nature take its course, and as it turns out, it's more complicated than just the birds and the bees.

Never Look Away is a new film from Germany just nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar. It's also picked up awards at major film festivals around the world. For KUNC film critic Howie Movshovitz, who teaches film and television at CU-Denver, the movie is simply, devastatingly good.

Colorado Edition is made possible with support from our KUNC members. Thank you!
