Growing on the High Plains: Growing Garllic

Believe it or not, this week's installment of Growing on the High Plains continues to keep an eye to next year's vegetable bed with a crack at the mighty garlic plant.

As we continue to focus forward on plans for our 2022 garden, this week's show flips the switch to a much-loved allium that tends to do well in our High Plains region. I'm talking about garlic, of course. Folklore claims it can repel evil spirits, while doctors remind us that it can also chase off bad cholesterol, heart disease, and some cancers. Known for its acrid odor, culinary popularity, and inimitible flavor when roasted into sweetness, consider getting some of these bulbs into the ground soon so they can pop up in the springtime.

Years ago Skip Mancini left the rocky coast of Northern California to return to her roots in the heartland. Her San Francisco friends, concerned over her decision to live in a desolate flatland best known for a Hollywood tornado, were afraid she would wither and die on the vine. With pioneer spirit, Skip planted a garden. She began to learn about growing not only flowers and vegetables, but hearts and minds. If you agree that the prairie is a special place, we think you'll enjoy her weekly sojourns into Growing on the High Plains.
