Make It Big: New MakerSpace at Amarillo Public Library—Downtown Branch

This week on High Plains Morning, we talked to Ben Wilting, the Digital Services Librarian at Amarillo Public Library, about their new MakerSpace — a facility where library cardholders can join together, relax, and work on art, general crafts, sewing/textiles, leatherworking, painting, clay, metalwork, woodworking, jewelry-making, repairs, or even experiment with starting a creative business. Their goal is to provide an open space for creative hobbies of all kinds to the community, encouraging connection, therapeutic play, and developing skills for different crafts. They have a massive collection of supplies, tools, materials, and equipment that’d get anyone excited about the prospects of what to make.

Ben said that the Makerspace construction was made possible by support from the Amarillo Area Foundation, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Friends of the Amarillo Public Library. (Kudos to the designers, because the space looks chic and inviting.)

To inquire about a making a donation of supplies and/or equipment, please contact Ben via email, or call him at 806-378-3586. Hear our full interview on the link below.
