SCOTUS Delays Redrawing Of Texas Congressional Districts After Lower-Court Gerrymandering Ruling

The United States Supreme Court has put a temporary hold on a lower court ruling that invalidated two of Texas’s congressional districts.

As The Texas Tribune reports, on Monday the high court released an order signed by Justice Samuel Alito, indicating that the justices wanted to hear from minority groups suing the State of Texas.

The order comes after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked the Supreme Court to block a unanimous finding by a Federal three-judge panel. The lower court found that Republican leaders in Texas intentionally discriminated against minorities when it drew the boundaries for Congressional Districts 27 and 35. The panel ruled that the districts violate the U.S. Constitution and the federal Voting Rights Act.

Rep. Mary González, vice chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, responded that “Stall and delay is the favorite tactic used by Attorney General Paxton.”
