More snowfall blanketed Southwestern Kansas over the weekend.
A wet snowstorm produced “impressive amounts of snow,” according to Bill Turner, a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service.
Garden City and Scott City received eight to nine inches of snow, while parts of Dodge City and Liberal received three to six inches of snow.
Over the next few days, warmer temperatures will begin to melt snow still on the ground. But another storm is predicted to bring below-zero wind chills and blizzard-like conditions, Turner said.
Some places in Southwest Kansas have already received half of their annual winter snowfall. Garden City has received approximately 20 inches of snow--which is close to the annual snowfall average for the whole winter.
Although it’s too early to know how much snow will fall in Southwest Kansas over the upcoming weekend, it will be “much, much colder by Saturday,” Turner said.
The National Weather Service continues to operate despite the partial federal government shutdown. Services like watches and warnings will continue uninterrupted.
