A Museum Worthy of Support

Texas Standard (heard on HPPR Connect weekdays at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Central) featured a storythis week on the struggles of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon. Texas Standard based its reporting on a recent Texas Observer article by Rose Cahalan.

Cahalan wrote: “Many of Texas’ museums are part of public universities, which have suffered from a drastic reduction in state funding over the decades. Texas isn’t alone in that — nationwide, state funding for public colleges in 2017 was $9 billion less than in 2008. And as universities have had to tighten their budgets, they’ve focused on their core mission of teaching and research, especially in science, technology, engineering and math. Museums, often seen as islands adrift in the campus ecosystem, have been a quiet casualty of this trend.”

This reduction in funding has put the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in peril.

This photo at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is a personal favorite. It is captioned, “Unidentified woman on ‘Old Bob’, ca 1885.”

Please allow a moment of personal opinion. On my first visit to the Texas Panhandle, I got a brief tour of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. I was hooked. I’ve been back multiple times since, focusing on different aspects of its impressive collection of artifacts.

Solving a problem like a lack of state funding is something that none of us can fix over a weekend, however, it’s never a bad idea to make a personal statement like supporting the museum or paying a visit to this gem in Canyon.
