With Canines at Our Sides
Welcome to HPPR Book Bytes. I’m Bob Seay. This is the first of three commentaries I’ll be doing about “Running with Sherman: How a Rescue Donkey Inspired a Rag-tag Gang of Runners to Enter the Craziest Race in America” by Christopher McDougall. The title says it all, or at least as much as you can say in twenty words and still have room to mention the author’s previous best-selling book on the cover.

This is Mike Strong, in Hays, for HPPR. The book is “Running With Sherman” by Christopher McDougall.Sherman is a delight from page one, or page 40 or page anything, anywhere you land, whether you read from start to end or in spurts or you skim. If you love animals at all, Christopher McDougall’s always slightly bemused prose will endear you to the smart, funny, cantankerous Sherman.

For Candy and Digit and Sherman and Lawrence
This is Mike Strong, in Hays, for HPPR. The book is “Running With Sherman” by Christopher McDougall.Digit, another of our rescues, was a three-legged dog. Medium height, two front legs and one back leg. Wayside Waifs thought she had been run over and tried to put her broken back leg together but eventually had to amputate it. Still, for the most part, you would think she barely noticed, although going upstairs was tougher with only one rear leg to push her upward.

"I Hear You, Charlie" by Alan Erwin
So, Constant Listeners, picture this: An endless landscape, flat and unbroken, stretching unadorned and undifferentiated to a far-away horizon. The ground is brown, dusty and lifeless; the sky is blue and cloudless. The hope for rain nowhere found, felt or sensed. Now imagine this landscape is in Texas. I know; it's hard to believe.
