  • President Obama has nominated Stanley Fischer to be vice chairman of the Federal Reserve.   • Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke testified before the House Committee on Financial Services Wednesday, saying that when and how the Fed winds down its stimulus program will depend on economic conditions.
  • Tunisian authorities have condemned the attacks on the American embassy and an American school. Many people were surprised that Tunisia was involved in the violence following a film mocking the prophet Mohammed which was made in the United States. Critics say the violence is a wake-up call for the Tunisian government.
  • In the Denver suburb of Aurora, a gunman opened fire in a packed movie theater where the new Batman film was premiering. So far, authorities confirm the deaths of 12 people. Many in the theater didn't register at first that the gunfire wasn't on the movie screen.
  • Jonas Mekas survived a Nazi labor camp and landed in New York City in 1949. He picked up a 16mm camera and began filming the new world around him. Mekas died Wednesday at 96.
