Environmentalists, the EPA, and farm groups continue to battle over a whether animal farms should be exempted from reporting emissions to the federal government.
Currently, an Environmental Protection Agency rule exempts all but the largest animal feeding operations from reporting ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions.
As Agri-Pulse reports, environmental groups claim the animal-feeding exemption is a threat to public health. They say forcing feeding operations to report their emissions helps the public avoid the facilities emitting the chemicals, while helping state and local agencies to craft regulations. But pork, beef, and poultry advocates insist the EPA has no authority to require large animal operations to report their emissions.
