An initiative to raise Colorado’s minimum wage has made the November ballot, reprts The Denver Post.
If the measure passes, the state’s minimum wage would rise to $12 by 2020. Supporters of Initiative 101 gathered many more signatures than the 99,000 needed to qualify for the ballot. Currently, Colorado’s minimum wage sits at $8.31 an hour.
Lizeth Chacon, co-chair of Colorado Families for a Fair Wage, said she was already celebrating the moment. “We know that Coloradans are with us and they realize it is hard to make a living in our community on the current minimum wage,” she said.
A study from the Bell Policy Center estimated that almost half a million workers would receive a wage hike if the measure passes. The vast majority of those workers will be over the age of 20.
