Colorado voters will go to the polls in November to decide on a measure known as Amendment 71.
As The Denver Post reports, the ballot initiative would make it significantly harder to amend Colorado’s constitution. If 71 passes, it would requiring that signatures for constitutional amendments be gathered from each state Senate district in Colorado.
Supporters of the measure say changing the state’s constitution should be difficult because it’s a foundational document. They say obtaining signatures from every district would ensure that citizens from across the state would have a say in which measures are placed on the ballot. This would give folks in rural parts of the state more of a say in their own governance.
Opponents argue that Amendment 71 would make it too difficult and costly to change the constitution.
