The Environmental Protection Agency has apparently made a preliminary finding that glyphosate is unlikely to cause cancer in humans, though the report isn’t yet available, says Politico. Glyphosate is the world’s most widely-used herbicide. It was introduced commercially by Monsanto in 1974. The chemical is more commonly known by its commercial name, RoundUp.
However, the agency isn’t ready to go public with the news yet. The substance has long been reputed to be deadly if one is exposed too often. The documents concerning the EPA’s findings were put on the agency’s docket for public viewing, then taken down again. The agency says the review of glyphosate still isn’t ready.
“Our assessment is still ongoing and not final,” said Nick Conger, an EPA spokesman. The finding would counteract the World Health Organization, which last year declared glyphosate a carcinogen.
