For almost 20 years, Amarillo went without a residential treatment center for alcohol and drug addiction.
But this weekend, as The Amarillo Globe-News reports, a Panhandle recovery group known as Amarillo Recovery from Alcohol and Drugs hosted an open house to cheer the opening of their new Comprehensive Treatment and Recovery Center.
The center is the result of a major push from the Amarillo community to get a local facility up and running, including a large gift from the Bivins Foundation. The new facility will be capable of providing residential treatment. While this is the first time Amarillo Recovery from Alcohol and Drugs will offer residential services, the group has operated a free 30-day drug and alcohol treatment program for the local homeless population for the past five years.
Martha Burkett, the center’s director, told the Globe-News she has felt a “groundswell of energy and momentum” from the Amarillo community.
