Borden County, in West Texas, has a population of only 676 people—and it’s possibly the most gun-friendly location in the gun-crazy state of Texas. More than one in five people over the age 21 in the county has a license to carry a handgun, reports The Dallas Morning News. That’s far higher than the rate in Texas at large, where only one in 20 has a handgun license.
Recent gun legislation in Texas has shined a spotlight on the state’s fascination with firearms. The open-carry debate has been a source of contention in cities like Austin or Dallas. But in Borden County, guns are simply a way of life.
“Everybody out here is raised with a gun,” said Sheriff Benny Ray Allison. “Pretty much everybody I know has a gun.”
Most residents would rather be known for their excellent school than their proliferation of firearms. But when it comes to guns, these residents also stress that education at home is paramount.
