The state sales tax holiday on back to school supplies runs from Friday through Sunday, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

Sales taxes do not have to be paid on items like clothing, footwear, backpacks and other classroom items, state officials said.

Shoppers will save $8 on every $100 purchase of exempt items.

“As Texas families begin the process of replacing their beach towels with lunch boxes, the sales tax holiday is the perfect opportunity to save money on supplies families need before the school bell rings,” State Comptroller Glenn Hegar said.  “As a father of three, I know how these expenses can add up.”

Apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free arelisted on the Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Shoppers this year will save around $102.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday.

The state sales tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999, the Comptroller reports.

Many local school districts are returning to classes in the next few weeks, according to school district websites.

San Antonio’s largest school district, Northside Independent School District, begins classes on Aug. 26. Around 106,000 students attend classes in the district, according to figures from the NISD.
