Baya Burgess is the summer intern at Kansas Reflector and a 2026 graduate of the University of Kansas’ journalism school. She grew up in Lawrence, and she has been reporting since she was 15 years old. Baya covered student news and culture for three years and was a multimedia editor for one year at KU’s student-led newspaper, the University Daily Kansan. She loves to document the people around her and strives to make their stories known.

Freelance journalist Jeff Rice grew up in northeastern Colorado. He has worked as a radio DJ and television reporter, but became a newspaperman while enlisted in the U.S. Army. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and worked for newspapers in Longmont and Sterling. He's now based in Sterling, where he specializes in reporting on water and agricultural topics.

Mike Pesca first reached the airwaves as a 10-year-old caller to a New York Jets-themed radio show and has since been able to parlay his interests in sports coverage as a National Desk correspondent for NPR based in New York City.

Alexsis Jones is a member of KERA’s morning team, as its Morning Show Producer. Alexsis was previously the Local Content Manager and Co-Producer of the West Texas Dispatch at KACU in Abilene, TX. Alexsis graduated from ACU with a bachelor’s in AD/PR and minors in English and Marketing. In her free time Alexsis enjoys reading, photography, and watching video essays over obscure topics.

Charley Maranville is a junior agricultural communications student at Texas Tech University. She grew up on the eastern plains of Colorado and loves writing about all things agriculture at the local, state, and national levels.
