Free First Mondays: DISCOVERIES ON US!

Join us at the Don Harrington Discovery Center for Free First Mondays!

The first Monday of every month, families can get in free from 4:30 PM-7:00 PM to explore, play, and learn after our regular business hours.

While you're here, catch our FREE Girls Who Science program from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Hear from different women with careers in the STEM industry every month, and join in on our activity just for girls ages 8-18! Girls Who Science is designed to inspire future women in STEM, but anyone is welcome to attend.

Odiously awful odes are sought for the 2026 West Texas A&M University Bad Poetry Contest, presented by Brick & Elm magazine.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. April 7 in the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus.

Participants—either WT-affiliated or from the general public—should bring two or three original poems. Audience members also are welcome to simply enjoy, to use that word loosely, the readings.

“Critic Ben Lerner has argued that poetry ‘has a fatal problem: poems.’ All poems, he suggests, are doomed, unable to live up to our demands on the art,” said Dr. Matthew Harrison, contest coordinator and WT’s Wendy Marsh Professor for Shakespeare Studies. “At our annual Bad Poetry Competition, we gather together to celebrate poetry's failures and our own.”

Poets are asked to keep their material in the PG-13 range.

Amarillo Public Library’s SocialRx program is a great opportunity for area residents looking to expand their horizons and their circle of friends.

The program is designed to introduce people to engaging opportunities available in our community. Each month, community organizations offer information about classes, volunteer opportunities, and clubs so interested individuals can explore the options.

At the September 11th, 2024 meeting:

--The Amarillo Chapter of the League of Women Voters will provide information on LWV membership, fellowship, and volunteer opportunities.
--ACTS Community will give us the scoop on the Senior Center and volunteer options.
--Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare will explain about ways to get involved in helping pets reunite with their people or find forever homes.

Each Social Rx meeting takes place on the second Wednesday of the month at 1 PM at the Downtown Library – located at 413 SE 4th. Come meet new people and learn new things! For more information, contact Program Specialist Cynthia Hunt at 806-378-6019.

When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. As Henrietta, in her free time, attempts to measure the light and distance of stars, she must also take measure of her life on Earth, trying to balance her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love. Henrietta’s story plays out against a landscape of early feminism and science, reminding us all what we can achieve when we allow curiosity and wonder into our lives.
