With Loose Regulations, Some OK Home Schoolers Struggle as Adults

Oklahoma’s home schooling laws are some of the loosest in the nation, reports member station KGOU. And as a result, some former home schoolers are having trouble acclimating to society as adults.

One Oklahoma cosmetology student said she was having trouble adjusting to the classroom environment, adding “suddenly having all those parameters, it was kind of difficult.” The state does not have a system in place to verify the quality of home education. The parents of many Oklahoma home schoolers do not impose deadlines. Students don’t take standardized tests with time limits or face the pressures of having to perform well.

As adults, many students experience gaps in their education. Bills that would have regulated home schooling died in committee. But many former homeschoolers are pushing for more oversight.
