Last week the Amarillo Globe News remembered a man who had a powerful and lasting impact on the Texas Panhandle. Roy Turner died this month at age 88. Turner was one of the individuals responsible for helping create Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch. Founded in 1939, Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch has served area youth who otherwise would not have a home. In the 7 decades since its inception, Boys Ranch has become an iconic part of the Texas Panhandle.
Roy Turner was one of the first nine boys that the legendary Cal Farley made a part of Boys Ranch in 1939. After graduating from Boys Ranch, Turner went on to create his own successful construction company. He later gave back to the organization that gave so much to him, and even built the Boys Ranch Chapel. Turner served on the Boys Ranch board of directors, as treasurer and as board president in 1986. In 1994 he was named the Globe-News Man of the Year.
