TPS Beneficiaries From El Salvador Must Re-register Before March 19

CREATIVE COMMONS

El Salvador’s Tempory Protected Status (or TPS) designation will end on Sept. 9, 2019, following Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen’s decision to terminate TPS for Salvadorans.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that current TPS beneficiaries from El Salvador who want to maintain their status, must re-register before March 19, 2018.

TPS is a temporary status given to some citizens of countries that have been affected by armed conflict or natural disaster, allowing them to live and work in the United States.

Over 200,000 Salvadorans live in the US with Temporary Protected Status, more than from any other country. They received the status following the El Salvador earthquakes in 2001.

According to US Census estimates, there are fewer than 9,000 people of Salvadoran descent in Kansas, and over 160,000 in Texas.

Because of the time it takes to re-register applications, Citizenship and Immigration Services has also extended currently valid employment authorization documents for Salvadorans through Sept. 5, 2018.

Information about how to re-register, including how to renew employment authorization documents, is at uscis.gov/tps.

More details are in this news release, which has an English and Spanish version.
